beliefs of a community = 族群的信仰

This screen is about the beliefs of the indigenous peoples of inland Sarawak. They believe bird calls can give warnings; for example, a red-headed bird that suddenly shrieks means enemies are lying in wait. The Kenyah wear wooden masks and wait in their fields before planting. As for the left side, even they cannot say why it is feared.

Example: The belief has been handed down from generation to generation without a clear reason.

Watch out: Choose what the text actually says, not a reason you make up yourself.

Contoh: Mereka menunggu sehingga burung bertuah berkicau sebelum meneruskan perjalanan.

bad omens = 凶兆

These two questions are about bad omens. In the past, if the Isit bird called softly on the left of the warriors’ path, they believed the attack would end badly, so the leader might cancel it or camp on the spot. A bird that laughs like a human was seen as bringing very grave news.

Example: They waited until a lucky bird sang before setting off again.

Watch out: A bad omen makes people stop and wait, not hurry on.

new words = 新词语

Notice what each word means in its sentence. Something that is very close in time is jìn zài méi jié. More chance of bad than good is xiōng duō jí shǎo. Guessing without proof is yì cè. Cān tiān describes trees so tall they seem to touch the sky.

Example: The exam is jìn zài méi jié, yet my brother is still playing video games.

Watch out: Wéi kàng means to disobey, so the sentence must mention an order or a rule.

Ask your family about an omen or taboo they believe in, for example about birds, the weather or certain days. Write what the belief is, then give your own view politely. You may agree or disagree, but show respect for other people’s culture and give a reason.

Example: My grandmother believes we should not sweep the floor on the first day of the New Year.

Watch out: Do not mock other people’s beliefs; explain your view respectfully.
