These three questions test the factors of competition and the kinds of symbiosis. Only animals of the same kind compete for mates. In mutualism both sides benefit. Epiphytes such as orchids grow high on trees to get sunlight, not to absorb food.

Example: An oxpecker eats the ticks on a rhinoceros, so both benefit.

Watch out: An orchid does not absorb food from the tree it grows on.

These two questions are about competition between plants. The more seedlings in the same space, the fiercer the competition for light, water, nutrients and space, so the seedlings grow thin. The way to solve it is to increase the distance between the plants.

Example: A pot with only one seedling produces the healthiest seedling.

Watch out: Insecticide does not reduce competition between plants.

1.(i) 是宿主。

In parasitism, the parasite is the living thing that benefits by taking food from another living thing. The host is the living thing that provides food or a home and is harmed. The flea gets blood, so the flea is the parasite and the dog is the host.

Example: A tapeworm in a pig’s intestine is the parasite, and the pig is the host.

Watch out: The host is usually bigger than the parasite.

bird’s nest fern = 鸟巢蕨

The bird’s nest fern is an epiphyte. It clings to a tree trunk to get light, and it gets water and nutrients from rain and the rotting leaves collected in its centre. It does not absorb the big tree’s food, so the tree is not harmed. This relationship is commensalism.

Example: Dry leaves falling into the centre of the fern become its source of nutrients.

Watch out: The fern’s roots cling to the bark, they do not grow into the tree.

Contoh: Dua ekor kucing berebut seekor ikan menunjukkan persaingan.

In group X, the eagle eats the rat, so the relationship is predation: the eagle is the predator and the rat is the prey. In group Y, the eagle and the snake fight over the same food, so their relationship is competition. Identify what each animal is doing.

Example: Two cats fighting over one fish shows competition.

Watch out: Animals that fight over food do not necessarily eat each other.

Seedlings growing close to a big tree must compete for sunlight, water, nutrients and space, and the big tree always wins. A good suggestion is to move the seedlings somewhere farther away. Explain which factors they no longer need to compete for.

Example: After being moved, the seedlings get enough light and nutrients and grow healthily.

Watch out: Watering more does not solve the problem of light and space.
