Plants compete for sunlight, water, nutrients and space. In each experiment, look for the one thing that is different between the two groups of seedlings. That difference is the factor being studied. The seedlings that get more of that factor grow healthier.

Example: Seedlings covered by a dark box grow weak because they get no light.

Watch out: Space means the distance between the seedlings, not the size of the pot.

epiphyte = 附生植物

A wild orchid grows attached to the branch of a big tree so that it is high up and gets sunlight for photosynthesis. The orchid does not absorb food from the tree and does not harm it. One side benefits and the other is not affected, so the relationship is commensalism.

Example: A bird’s nest fern clings to a tree trunk to get light.

Watch out: An epiphyte is not a parasite because it does not absorb the host’s food.

Awas: Tumbuhan parasit menyerap makanan, bukan sekadar menumpang.

Dodder is a parasitic plant that twines around another plant and absorbs water and nutrients from it. The host plant becomes weak and wilts. One side benefits and the other is harmed, so the relationship is parasitism.

Example: A hibiscus plant wrapped in dodder starts to wilt.

Watch out: A parasitic plant absorbs food, it does not just hang on.

Interactions between living things are important for the balance of nature. They make sure species survive and continue. Predation and competition control the number of living things in a habitat. This stops natural resources from running out, and the ecosystem stays balanced.

Example: Without snakes, the number of rats in the paddy field would grow very large.

Watch out: A controlled number does not mean the living thing becomes extinct.
