conditions for a lunar eclipse = 月食的条件

A lunar eclipse needs the earth to be between the sun and the moon, with all three in a straight line. Only people on the night side of the earth facing the moon can see it. The moon turns dark red because sunlight is scattered and refracted by the earth’s atmosphere.

Example: A lunar eclipse can only be seen at night.

Watch out: The moon does not give out its own light.

Contoh: Cermin mata gerhana menapis hampir semua cahaya matahari.

Awas: Jangan melihat matahari melalui teropong.

watching a solar eclipse = 观测日食

People in the moon’s umbra see a total eclipse, while people in the penumbra see a partial eclipse. To watch a solar eclipse safely, use special eclipse glasses. Ordinary sunglasses, binoculars and magnifying glasses can damage the eyes.

Example: Eclipse glasses filter out almost all sunlight.

Watch out: Never look at the sun through binoculars.

conditions for a solar eclipse = 日食的条件

The two main conditions for a solar eclipse are that the sun, the moon and the earth are in a straight line, and that the moon is between the sun and the earth. This only happens at new moon, around the first day of a month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

Example: A solar eclipse happens in the daytime.

Watch out: The positions of the earth and the moon are swapped compared with a lunar eclipse.

annular eclipse = 日环食

An annular eclipse happens when the moon is further from the earth. The moon looks smaller than the sun, so it cannot cover the whole sun and a ring of light is still visible. This can only be seen by people in the area of the moon’s shadow.

Example: An annular eclipse was seen in some parts of Malaysia in 2019.

Watch out: The moon does not change size, it only looks small because it is far away.

Apabila seluruh bulan memasuki penumbra bumi, berlaku gerhana bulan penumbra dan bulan hanya menjadi sedikit malap. Apabila sebahagian bulan memasuki umbra, berlaku gerhana bulan separa.

Contoh: Gerhana penumbra sukar dilihat kerana bulan hanya sedikit malap.

Awas: Tulis dua sifat cahaya yang berbeza.

When the whole moon enters the earth’s penumbra, a penumbral lunar eclipse happens and the moon only dims slightly. When part of the moon enters the umbra, a partial lunar eclipse happens. Two properties of light that explain eclipses are that light travels in a straight line and cannot pass through opaque objects.

Example: A penumbral eclipse is hard to notice because the moon only dims slightly.

Watch out: Write two different properties of light.

arranging the model = 摆放模型

To model a lunar eclipse, put the football that stands for the earth between the bulb that stands for the sun and the ping pong ball that stands for the moon, in a straight line. The football blocks the bulb’s light, so its shadow falls on the ping pong ball.

Example: The ping pong ball goes dark when it enters the football’s shadow.

Watch out: The earth must be in the middle for a lunar eclipse.

explaining the model = 解释模型

Explain that the opaque football blocks the bulb’s light, which travels in a straight line, so a shadow forms behind it. The ping pong ball in that shadow goes dark, just like the moon during a lunar eclipse.

Example: The football’s shadow falls on the ping pong ball.

Watch out: Mention the shadow and the property of light in your explanation.

A lunar eclipse happens at night at full moon, around the fifteenth day of the lunar month. A solar eclipse happens in the daytime at new moon, around the first day. The earth’s shadow is much bigger than the moon’s shadow, so a total lunar eclipse can last over an hour, while a total solar eclipse lasts no more than about seven and a half minutes.

Example: A total lunar eclipse can be watched for longer than a total solar eclipse.

Watch out: Check day, night and the lunar calendar day carefully.

Orbit bulan mengelilingi bumi condong kira-kira lima darjah berbanding orbit bumi mengelilingi matahari.

The moon’s orbit around the earth is tilted about five degrees compared with the earth’s orbit around the sun. So at most full moons, the moon passes slightly above or below the earth’s shadow, and a lunar eclipse does not happen every month.

Example: Lunar eclipses usually happen only two or three times a year.

Watch out: A full moon every month does not mean an eclipse every month.
