This text is told by Fabre, a famous French insect scientist. He watches spiders and runs experiments to find out how a spider knows there is prey in its web. The telegraph was an early invention that sent messages over long distances using electricity.
Example: Fabre places a dead locust on a web and watches whether the spiders come for it.
Watch out: Keep apart what Fabre did, what he saw and what he concluded.
eksperimen = 实验
experiment = 实验
Fabre tested whether spiders find prey by sight or by vibration. A still, dead locust did not interest them, even placed right in front of them. When he wiggled it with a long blade of grass so the web shook, the spiders attacked at once.
Example: The spiders wrapped the dead locust again and again as if it were a live insect.
Watch out: A good experiment changes only one thing; here that thing was the vibration.
Bandingkan dua keadaan dalam eksperimen. Apabila belalang diam di depan labah-labah, tiada apa berlaku, jadi penglihatan bukan petunjuknya. Apabila sarang digoyangkan, labah-labah terus datang.
drawing a conclusion = 得出结论
Compare the two situations in the experiment. When the locust lay still in front of the spiders, nothing happened, so sight was not the clue. When the web was shaken, the spiders came at once. The only difference was the vibration, so that is the answer.
Example: Even spiders hidden among the leaves, unable to see the locust, rushed over.
Watch out: Smell is never mentioned in the text.
signal line = 信号线
One thread links the centre of the web to the spider’s hiding place. It is about fifty centimetres to two or three metres long. It works as a bridge, but also as a signalling tool, because the centre is joined to every radial thread.
Example: If an insect struggles at the edge, the shaking travels along a radial thread to the centre and on into that line.
Watch out: Fabre reasons that a mere bridge would start from the top of the web instead.
penaakulan = 推理
reasoning = 推理
Fabre uses reasoning. If the thread were only a bridge, a route from the top of the web would be shorter and less steep. Yet the spider chooses the centre. That is because the centre receives vibrations from every radial thread, so the line can carry news of prey.
Example: The centre of the web is like a main station that receives messages from every direction.
Watch out: The text says the top route would be shorter, so the third option is wrong.
Fabre found that only older spiders use the line skilfully. Resting in a tent of leaves, a spider keeps one leg on the line so it can doze yet stay alert. When wind shakes the web, the spider stays put, as if it knows the signal is false.
Example: Fabre compares the line to a telephone that carries all sorts of real sounds.
Watch out: Young spiders are too lively and have not learned this skill yet.
Fabre uses several methods to explain his findings. Experiments give proof, measurements of the thread make the explanation exact, and comparisons with a bridge, a telegraph and a telephone help readers grasp what the thread does. Reasoning explains why the thread starts at the centre.
Example: Comparing the thread to a telephone makes readers see at once that it carries signals.
Watch out: Do not confuse the comparison method with the measurement method.
This sentence gives the thread’s length in centimetres and metres. When a writer uses exact numbers to explain something, the method is giving figures. There is no comparison with another object and no experiment in this sentence.
Example: Fifty centimetres to two or three metres helps readers picture the real length.
Watch out: A comparison needs another object to compare with, such as a bridge or a telephone.
words from the text = 课文词语
The writer uses words normally meant for people to describe the spiders, which makes a science text feel lively. The spider is bì mù yǎng shén, resting with eyes closed, and bú xiè yí gù towards false signals, as if they are not worth a glance.
Example: Shǒu zhū dài tù here describes the spider waiting in one spot for prey to come to it.
Watch out: In the original fable this idiom mocks a lazy man; here it simply means waiting.
perbandingan = 打比方
comparison = 打比方
A telegraph sends messages quickly from far away. The spider’s thread also carries vibrations from any part of the web straight to the leg of a spider hiding at a distance. Because the two work in the same way, Fabre calls the thread a telegraph line.
Example: The spider need not sit on the web to know prey has arrived, just as a telegraph receiver need not be at the scene.
Watch out: A full answer says what is sent, where it goes and how it helps the spider.
false signals = 假信号
Fabre asked whether the thread could tell prey from wind. His observation showed that the spider does not move when wind shakes the web. So the spider can tell the real shaking of struggling prey apart from the false shaking caused by wind.
Example: Just as we recognise a friend’s voice on the phone, the spider recognises a prey’s vibration.
Watch out: The text never says the spider pulls down its web.
reading summary = 小结
This reading explained how Fabre uncovered a spider’s secret through experiments and careful watching. The thread from the centre of the web carries vibrations to the hidden spider, just like a telegraph. You also learned the explanation methods used in science writing and words that bring the text to life.
Example: The dead locust moved with a blade of grass proved that spiders rely on vibration.
Watch out: When explaining the name telegraph line, state clearly what the thread does.
